The Gut-Skin Axis: How Your Gut Health May Affect Your Skin

You've probably heard of active skincare ingredients such as retinol, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide being hailed as the secret to youthful, glowing skin. But what if one of the most important influences on your complexion isn't found in your bathroom cabinet at all? Increasingly, research suggests that healthy skin may start much deeper, in the gut. (Mann EA et al, 2020; Sinha et al, 2021; Mahmud et al, 2022).

 

What is the gut-skin axis?

Scientists now recognise that the gut and skin are closely connected through what is known as the gut-skin axis. This complex communication network links the gut microbiome, immune system, hormones, nervous system and skin, helping explain why digestive health and skin health often go hand in hand. (Jimenez-Sanchez et al, 2025; Zhao et al, 2025). 

 

The skin microbiome matters too

Just like the gut, the skin has its own microbiome, a diverse community of beneficial bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that live on its surface. (Grice & Segre, 2011). Maintaining this delicate ecosystem is important. Excessive cleansing, harsh skincare products, unnecessary antibiotic use and environmental stressors can disrupt the balance of the skin microbiome, weakening the skin barrier and potentially contributing to inflammatory conditions such as acne, eczema and dermatitis. (Hitakshika et al, 2025). 

Healthy skin isn't about stripping it back. Preserving the skin's natural microbiome helps protect against irritation and inflammation, while overusing harsh active ingredients may leave it more vulnerable. 

 

How gut health may influence the skin

While topical skincare remains an important part of maintaining healthy skin, supporting the body from within is equally important. Inside your digestive tract lives an enormous community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome. Made up of trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi, this ecosystem helps digest food, produce nutrients, regulate immunity and maintain the gut lining. Its composition is unique to every individual and is shaped by genetics, diet, lifestyle, medications and the environment. (Mann et al, 2020)

When this microbial community becomes disrupted, a state known as gut dysbiosis, inflammation may increase throughout the body. Researchers believe this inflammatory process may also play a role in the development and severity of certain skin conditions, although the relationship is complex and still being actively studied.

Gut dysbiosis may also affect how your body absorbs and processes nutrients that are important for healthy skin. Beneficial gut bacteria thrive on prebiotic fibres found naturally in plant foods. As they ferment these fibres they produce short-chain fatty acids that help regulate inflammation, strengthen the gut barrier and support immune function, all of which may benefit skin health. What to eat to support gut health

A diet rich in a variety of vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, pulses such as beans and lentils, nuts and seeds, provides plenty of prebiotic fibre to nourish beneficial gut bacteria. Including fermented foods such as live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut may also help support a healthy microbiome. (Guts UK, 2026; BBC Food, 2026). Staying well hydrated is also important, with general guidance recommending around six to eight glasses of fluid a day, depending on individual needs. (BDA, 2026)

Some research suggests that eating a wider variety of plant foods — often framed as around 30 different plant foods a week — may help support greater microbial diversity. This might sound impossible, but varying the colours and types of plant foods you eat each week is a great place to start. (BBC Good Food, 2023).

 

Probiotics and prebiotics: what does the evidence say?

Interest in probiotics has exploded in recent years, with many products promising clearer skin from the inside out. However, the reality is a little more nuanced.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that may provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. Research into probiotics and skin conditions is ongoing, but evidence is mixed and benefits appear to depend on the specific strain and condition being studied. Different probiotic strains can have different effects, and no single probiotic has been shown to benefit everyone. (Guts UK, 2026; NHS, 2025). 

Less well known are prebiotics, which are the naturally occurring fibres that feed the beneficial bacteria already living in your gut. Foods rich in prebiotics include onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, oats, bananas and pulses. While research into prebiotics and skin health is still evolving, there is strong evidence that they help support a healthy, diverse gut microbiome, which may in turn support overall health, with potential implications for skin health too. (Guts UK, 2026; NHS, 2025).

Rather than relying on probiotics or prebiotics as miracle solutions, the strongest evidence continues to support the basics: a varied, fibre-rich diet, adequate hydration, regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management and an evidence-based skincare routine. (BDA, 2026).

 

The bigger picture 

The bottom line is that healthy skin is not just shaped by what you apply to your face. It is also influenced by what is happening inside your body. While there is no single food, supplement or skincare product that can guarantee flawless skin, supporting gut health through a varied, fibre-rich diet and healthy lifestyle habits may contribute to overall health and wellbeing, including skin health.

However, it is important to understand that lifestyle changes alone will not resolve every skin concern. If you have a persistent skin condition or your symptoms are worsening or affecting your quality of life, it is important to seek a professional assessment rather than relying on self-diagnosis, supplements or restrictive diets.
